Mark J. Scarp is a faculty associate (adjunct professor) of journalism at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, where he teaches journalism ethics and diversity. He currently is communications manager of the Heard Museum in Phoenix. Mark had worked as a full-time journalist for 24 years, having held various editorial positions at the East Valley Tribune and its predecessor, the Scottsdale Progress. A member of the Valley of the Sun chapter board of the Society of Professional Journalists for 22 years, Mark has served six terms as president of the chapter. He also served from 1997 to 2003 on the SPJ national board of directors, representing Region 11 (Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada). As past chapter president, Mark remains active on the Valley of the Sun (Phoenix) chapter board, where he supervises several chapter programs for the professional and educational benefit of journalists. A recipient of the Arizona Newspaper Association’s Freedom of Information Award, he also represents the Valley of the Sun SPJ chapter on the board of directors of the First Amendment Coalition of Arizona. He served as coalition president from 2001 to 2005.
